'Awrah refers to the parts of the human body that are not meant to be exposed in front of others.
'Awrah is governed by a set of rules that define permissibility of exposure of body parts. There are rules that define which parts of the human body are permissible to be exposed in front of others, and which parts must or should be covered. The rules apply differently based on the gender (male in front of males, males in front of females, females in front of males, or females in front of females), act (e.g., while praying), relationship (e.g., husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, etc.), governance (e.g., mahram or not) place (e.g., in the Ka'ba during hajj), and other factors.
