I spend time on online communities such as twitter, where I often use swear words. I never direct those at anybody in an insulting manner, nor do I use them when I know they could hurt somebody. Mashallah I have never said swear words out loud, which I am aware can be sinful. My question is it sinful to type swear words online, even though you are not saying them with your tongue, and being careful they do not cause harm?

  • The premise "It is a sin to utter X with the tongue but not a sin to type" is questionable. If it's not ok to speak a lie, or backbite, or abuse some unjustly via speech, does it become ok to do those things if typed out and not actually spoken? Why should typing out a swearword be any different from speaking out the swearword, if the contexts are otherwise identical?
