Salam, I have really bad arachnophobia which is fear of spiders so they way I remove them unfortunately is by killing them. Now I’m very conflicted as to whether this is allowed in Islam mainly because of how they played a role in keeping Prophet Muhammed safe and as a kid I was taught to not kill them. Yet I read on another website that it is allowed. I just wanted to get a proper answer to help ease my thoughts. Jazakallah Khair

If the spider is innocent (I.e it may not harm you or may not spread germs and diseases etc..), then it maybe haram for you to kill such spiders.

But if the spider can harm (I.e it may harm you or it could spread germs etc..) it may be totally halal to kill it

Bismillah. Alhamdulillahi rabbil-'alamin was-Salatu was-Salam 'ala Sayyidil-Mursalin wa 'ala 'Alihi wa Sahbihi Ajma'in.

There is no clear evidence, specifically about spiders, that would allow us to say "killing spiders is Haram". Prophet (ﷺ) ordered killing some animals like dogs, salamanders and some others but spider is not in the list.

However, there is hadith which suggests general ruling on killing creatures of Allah without a justifying reason which would be wise to take into account.

It was narrated that 'Amr bin Sharid said:

"I heard Sharid say: 'I herd the Messenger of Allah say: Whoever kills a small bird for no reason, it will beseech Allah on the Day of Resurrection saying: O Lord, so and so killed me for no reason. And he did not kill me for any beneficial purpose."'

Sunan an-Nasa'i 4446

The bird is an example of Allah's creature and Prophet (ﷺ) is warning that killing creatures of Allah without a justifying reason may cause problems on Judgement Day. If you pay attention Prophet (ﷺ) is not prohibiting this action.

  • If something is Haram then you cannot do it whether you have a reason or not.
