So for one year I have had a young cat that's I've raised as a house cat since he was a kitten. My dad recently proclaimed that this was cruel and cited the quote about the woman who went to hell because of imprisonment of her cat and not feeding it.

I personally don't think having a cat as a house cat is comparable to the woman who imprisoned her cat and didn't feed or give it water. Could anyone give me an insight into this please.

I believe jinns possess certain animals . Mostly dogs , snake and some cases cats. So if you bring cat into your home ; there is a chance that you might bring turmoil into your home . There is few people who explained this.

Also on the day of judgement you will be responsible for the well being of any animal that’s under your care. Animals meant to be free. So if you open your door and cat runs out but your keeping this animal from running away. That means that cat is your prisoner. Yes not in chains but it’s freedom taken away by you so you can pet and love as you please , feed as you please , water when you please , play with you only when you please . Also many neuter their cats so you taking this animals reproductive rights away. And let’s say you didn’t and this cat given birth to many kittens. You will give its children’s ( kittens away ) . You will be questioned for the well being of this animal on the day of judgement.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) loved cats and pet them but he never kept them inside of his home. They were free and came and went as they please as free animals.

If you serve food to the cat regularly and don't torment, it is obviously allowed to have a pet cat (but buying or selling cats is not allowed). You can click here for detailed information.

However, obeying parents is obligatory in Islam. So, you should try to manage your father psychologically first. Then, if he agrees, you can feel free to have any pet cat.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2365 Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "A woman was tortured and was put in Hell because of a cat which she had kept locked till it died of hunger." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) further said, (Allah knows better) Allah said (to the woman), 'You neither fed it nor watered when you locked it up, nor did you set it free to eat the vermin of the earth.' " What she did was she locked the cat up and never fed and she went to hell because of that cats are good because cats bring angels which is a good thing. They also bring sunnah and their saliva is pure. And if you love cats you have faith

  • Not a bad answer, just lacking the conclusion that everything is okay if you feed the cats and care for them because the sin was that she let them starve.

As you said it yourself,"... having a cat as a house cat is comparable to the woman who imprisoned her cat and didn't feed or give it water....".

The story that your father is telling you is indeed true; (Sahih al-Bukhari 2365), but the meaning you are getting from this is not to torture anyone regardless it is an animal as Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) does not like these acts and will surely punish such people.
