Is it allowed to give salam or to respond to the salam of my family members who follow a deviant sufi sect?

If I don't say salam my family members get suspicious and angry at me because I always used to say salam to them before so what should I do? Is it obligatory for me to keep ties with my deviant family members?

A few years ago I broke off kinship with my cousin who follows a deviant sect. It wasn't because he follows a deviant sect but for other reasons, back then I used to follow the deviant sect.

Is it obligatory for me to fix ties with him or to avoid talking to him?

  • Why shouldn't you? Isn't it impolite not to greet relatives?
