I was reading the original (first edition, 1930) English Quran translation by Marmaduke Pickthall on the Quran Explorer and noticed that he 1) don't number the basmalah ("In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful") as verse number one in chapter one, but instead 2) splits the last verse in two (compared to other translators and the Arabic Text), to make up for the total count of seven verses.

Why is that and do we have any original Arabic Quranic Text(s) that supports such a numbering?
