This is the Sahih International translation:

The hypocrites will call to the believers, "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah.

In this talk (and also in some other translations, both in English and in Turkish), Nouman Ali Khan, explains the part awaited [misfortune for us] watarabbastum as, “delaying to change (as in repenting, etc.)”

From these different translations, it seems that the term or the concept can be taken or understood in more than one way. The problem is that to my ears, the two interpretations are nowhere close. Has there been a through commentary by the expert scholars?
