Assalamu Alaikum Brothers in Islam,

Regarding the soul being breathed into the body, i found conflicting reports. How can both be true?

1) Each one of you is constituted in the womb of the mother for forty days, and then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a similar period, and then a piece of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write four things. He is ordered to write down his deeds, his livelihood, his (date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into him…” (Sahih al-Bukhari no: 3036).

2) Hudhayfah b. Usayd narrated: "After the drop (nutfah) is in the womb for forty or forty-five nights, the angel comes to it and says: 'O Lord, will it be fortunate or unfortunate?' And these matters shall be written. Then he says: 'O Lord, will it be male or female?" [Sahîh Muslim 6392]

Hadith 1) says the soul is breathed after 120 days and hadith 2) says 40 days. How can both be Sahih?

  • Hadith 1 says 40 days hadith 2 says 40 or 45 days (which looks like a doubt of the narrator) . None of them says 120 at least not in your quotes. – Medi1Saif Jan 5 at 17:12
  • apparently Some of the Sunni Ulama reached a concencus that the soul was breathed around 120 days. because "Each one of you is constituted in the womb of the mother for forty days, and then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a similar period, and then a piece of flesh for a similar period". which is 40+40+40 = 120. – Abdulla Jan 5 at 17:16
  • Hm... can you share names of scholars or quotes that hold this view? – Medi1Saif Jan 6 at 15:02
  • Shaykh Ibn Baaz : "It is only called a child after four months, after the soul is breathed into it, and (in the event of miscarriage or abortion), it must be washed and the funeral prayer offered for it; it is considered to be a child, and we hope that he will intercede for his parents. However before that, it is not a human being, and it is not regarded as a deceased person or a child, and it is not to be washed or the funeral prayer offered for it, even if there are some discernible human features in the lump of flesh." - Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb by Ibn Baaz (13/482) – Abdulla Jan 7 at 1:32
  • "If the aborted foetus died before four months of pregnancy, it is not a human being; rather it is a piece of flesh that may be buried in any place. It is not to be washed or shrouded, the funeral prayer is not to be offered for it, and it will not be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection. But after four months, the soul has been breathed into it and it has become human, so if it is aborted or miscarried, he is to be washed and shrouded, the funeral prayer is to be offered for him" End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (25/225). – Abdulla Jan 7 at 1:33
