If there is war in my country, can I move to another country to avoid it? I read that running from the battlefield is a sin. Will I be punished for not defending my country? What is the penalty?

If you are not Muslim, why are you worrying about Islamic sin? Or do you mean you are a new Muslim? – The Z Dec 12 '18 at 1:09
  • @Oner What you read applies to "soldiers" in battle. It is not for civilians. In Islam, a soldier is obligated to defend his group in the battle. If he "absconds/run away" from the battle field, it is considered a sin. Also note there is a difference between defending your religion & defending your country. If a country (like China, India, Israel & Russia) uses it's army to oppress the local Muslim population, they you are not obligated to listen to your ruler. Infact, standing up against a tyrant leader is an even bigger jihad and will inshallah give you more sawaab. – Ahmed Dec 12 '18 at 6:00
  • @Ahmed Actually the difference between soldier and civilian is a modern construct, not something that has any basis in Islam. Defending the Darul Islam is فرض عين , an individual obligation on every able Muslim. – UmH Dec 12 '18 at 8:50
  • @UmH, so what is the punishment? Can I avoid it somehow? – Oleh Dec 12 '18 at 11:31

What type of war? Is it against the Muslim population in your country? – Crimson Dec 13 '18 at 13:48
