This question has ever been asked but i'm asking it again because:

  1. The answers given are not concrete
  2. Closed (as primarily opinion based)
  3. Closed (as too broad)

The questions are as follows:

First is there any unambiguous source from Quran and/or Hadith which clearly mentions that Woman should cover their hair ?

Second, Now if it is not clear, what are the main sources (e.g. Quran Verse or Hadiths) that were interpreted, if possible for the different madhabs ?

Third, how the interpretations has lead to conclusion that Hijab is obligatory, clearly, the interpretations has been performed by different madhabs and in each madhabs, there was a logical entailment from the sources that Hijab is obligatory, in short what was the usool used for deriving this obligation, if possible for each madhabs ?

NB: In no way, I am contesting the principle of Hijab, I am instead pro this practice, and sure that the great mujtahids have put forward such a practice as fard/wajib, then it must be important, i'm only wishing to see the evidence behind or the way they derived the ruling

Jazak Allah

Hijab is considered as obligatory by Quran, sunnah and Ijma' by all scholars! The clearest evidence is of course from sunnah as it describes exactly what a woman can show off or not and there's no difference about that in general.

thanks @Medi1Saif, can you provide us with the evidence from the sunna, as I mentioned in the question, unambiguous evidence which clearly says hair must be covered

This was asked here (closed as primarily opinion-based), here (closed as unclear what you're asking) and here (closed as too broad). Odd; it seems like a perfectly fine Islam-related question to me. Commented Mar 22, 2017 at 11:33

Same, I don't understand why people are closing it, probably people are getting emotional about it, because unfortunately, within the islamic communities which ban questioning the core or something (which may be perfectly legal) for centuries, in my question in no way I am contesting, i'm only looking for evidences

Regarding Qur'an 24:31 you need to know that the women at the time of revelation of this ayah used to cover their hair already, but in a way which exposed their chest and part of the neck. Therefore, Allah swt ordered them to pull the head cover over their chests. Hence you do not find the command to cover the hair as the women were already doing so.

The Quran and Sunnah state that a woman should cover everything. The head and hair are included in everything. Evidence is not required to prove that they are must be covered, rather evidence is required to prove the claim that they are an exception, and no such evidence exists.

The evidence of covering everything, including the head\hair\neck includes:

Quran:

What to cover?

Surah al-Ahzab, verse 59

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments.

Quran 33:59

This verse states that women should bring down over themselves their Jilbab. "Themselves" means their entire selves by default, including their heads and hair. There is no exception mentioned in this verse and hair are also not mentioned as an exception in any other verse or hadith so they are not an exception.

Further the garment called Jilbab is by definition a garment that covers the entire body and especially the head.

In the language of the Arabs with which the Messenger of Allah addressed us with the Jilbab is a garment that covers the whole body and not just part of it

Al-Muhalla bi’l-Aathaar

Jilbab ... what is correct is that it is a garment that covers the entire body

Tafsir al-Qurtubi

Further, covering the head is how the Muslims applied this verse when it was revealed.

Narrated Umm Salamah:

When the verse "That they should cast their outer garments over their persons" was revealed, the women of Ansar came out as if they had crows over their heads by wearing outer garments.

Abu Dawud

Surah al-Ahzab, verse 53

And when you ask for something, ask them from behind a partition

Quran 33:53

This verse states that when men have a need to visit non-mahram women in their homes then there must be a curtain between the two. This means that a woman's entire body has to be covered, and hair is included. There is no mention of any exceptions in this verse rather the apparent meaning is that everything is concealed behind the curtain including hair.

When the hair are covered from visiting non-mahrams inside the house they must also be kept covered when the woman goes outside.

Surah al-Noor, verse 31

And tell the believing women ... to not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof

Quran 24:31

This verse commands women to conceal their adornments with some exceptions. This literally means that they have to conceal all adornments unless they are mentioned as exceptions.

Hair are an adornment: They are combed, styled, dyed and decorated with jewellery like tiaras and chains etc.

Hair are not explicitly mentioned as an exception in this verse or in any other verse, nor in the sunnah. There is however an exception mentioned in the verse which is "that which [necessarily] appears thereof " This means:

  • What is not possible to conceal i.e. outermost layer of clothing. Hair can be concealed easily with at least one layer of clothing.
  • What has to be uncovered due to some necessity. Such as the eyes for seeing where one is going, or the face for verification of identity. There is nothing which necessitates uncovering the hair.
  • What gets uncovered accidentally such as during movement. This does not mean that it can be left uncovered intentionally.

Hence Hair are not among the exceptions, and they are included by default in what must be concealed.

The verse goes on to say:

وليضربن بخمرهن على جيوبهن

and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests

Quran 24:31

This part of the verse commands to also cover the chest with their headcover. This automatically implies that a headcover must also be worn.

Obligation?

The above verses command to cover and a command is by default considered an obligation. Further the fact that it is an obligation is also proven by:

Surah al-Ahzab, verse 55

There is no blame upon women concerning their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons or their women or those their right hands possess.

Quran 33:55

This verse is evidence that Hijab is obligatory. Because it says that there is no blame on uncovering in front of mahrams, this implies that there is blame for uncovering in front of non-mahrams. When there is blame it implies that a person is abstaining from something obligatory since there is no blame on abstaining from something that is merely recommended or permissible.

Surah al-Noor, verse 60

And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage - there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment. But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them.

Quran 24:60

This verse is also evidence that Hijab is obligatory. Because it says that there is no blame on old women who remove their outer garment, which implies that there is blame on young women who remove it. When there is blame it implies that a person is abstaining from something obligatory since there is no blame on abstaining from something that is optional.

Sunnah:

Hadith of Abdullah Ibn Masud

A woman is 'Awrah (that which must be concealed)

Saheeh Ibn Khuzaimah

This hadith states that a woman (in her entirety) is to remain concealed. The head is not mentioned here or in any other hadith as an exception and so it is not an exception.

Hadith of Aisha

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ... When a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and he pointed to his face and hands.

Abu Dawud

This hadith proves that a woman must cover everything and some exceptions are mentioned (face and hands). The head or hair are not mentioned as exceptions and so they are not exceptions and must be covered.

Hadith of Fatimah

The Prophet (ﷺ) brought Fatimah a slave which he donated to her. Fatimah wore a garment which, when she covered her head, did not reach her feet, and when she covered her feet by it, that garment did not reach her head. When the Prophet (ﷺ) saw her struggle, he said: There is no harm to you: Here is only your father and slave.

Abu Dawud

The above hadith is about the relaxation of hijab in front of mahrams like a woman's father and slave. The Prophet ﷺ said "There is no harm to you: Here is only your father and slave" ... this implies that there would be harm if someone other than her mahrams were present, which means that hijab from non-mahrams is obligatory. Further this hadith explicitly proves that covering the head is part of hijab.

Ijma:

The jurists all agree that the head and hair must be covered. Consensus is evidence by itself in Islamic law.

They agreed that the hair of a free woman and her body except her face and hands is to be covered

Maraatib al-Ijmaa‘

Do you have an idea which verse was revealed first, 24:31 or 33:59?

The below hadith could be used as a strong evidence to argue that hijab is mandatory.

Narrated Safiya bint Shaiba:`Aisha used to say: "When (the Verse): "They should draw their veils over their necks and bosoms," was revealed, (the ladies) cut their waist sheets at the edges and covered their heads and faces with those cut pieces of cloth." Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 4759 In-book reference : Book 65, Hadith 281 USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 282

The next hadith could also be another evidence for Hijab being obligatory, but the word "Jilbab" seems a bit ambiguous to me.

"Allah's Messenger would order the virgins, the mature women, the secluded and the menstruating to go out for the two Eid. As for the menstruating women, they were to stay away from the Musalla and participate in the Muslims supplications." One of them said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What if she does not have a Jilbab? He said: 'Then let her sis lend her a Jilbab.'"Reference : Jami` at-Tirmidhi 539

“O Prophet! Say to your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers that: they should let down upon themselves their jalabib.” (33:59).

What Is The Meaning Of “Jalabib”?

Jalabib جَلاَبِيْبٌ is the plural of jilbabجِلْبَابٌ , which means a loose outer garment. See any Arabic dictionary like Lisanu ’l-‘Arab, Majma‘u ’l-Bahrayn or al-Munjid.

Al-Munjid, for instance, defines jilbab as “the shirt or a wide dress—القميص أو الثوب الواسع.” While al-Turayhi, in Majma‘u ’l-Bahrayn, defines it as “a wide dress, wider than the scarf and shorter than a robe, that a woman puts upon her head and lets it down on her bosom...”5

This means that the Islamic dress code for women does not only consist of a scarf that covers the head, the neck and the bosom; it also includes the overall dress that should be long and loose.

So, for instance, the combination of a tight, short sweater with tight-fitting jeans with a scarf over the head does not fulfill the requirements of the Islamic dress code.

..

This is an extract from another website, I only copied the part mentioning the 'Jalabib' since it is the clearest one.

From this, it is quite clear that the Noble Quran is commanding the holy Prophet to tell the 'believing women' to not 'let down' the 'Jalabib', a garment which as mentioned above also includes a headscarf.

Other than this, another verse commands the use of a 'Khumur' to cover the bosoms, but the garment itself is meant to cover the head as well.

A very simple google search on the two items mentioned above will show you all you need to know.

Salam.

  • but can't it be argued that this hadith implies to cover their bosoms but not their hair?

  • Rather than hadith, this is the Holy Quran itself, just so you know. On the topic of your question, it could be seen that way, but the covering of the head is implied through the actual garment itself. Either way, I believe the first verse mentioned is enough evidence to establish the hijab as it is commonly seen, the second is more specific to the bosoms and such. Commented Oct 14 at 2:32
  • Yes Quran I read it wrong initially. But what am I saying is, the ayah u quoted isn't explicitely stating that Hair itself is awrah, but its stressing more on covering their bosoms dont u think? Once again im not trying to contest the fact that Hijab is obligatory but I want to know on what evidences the scholars have come to a crystal clear consensus that Hijab is obligatory. Can we find in hadith literature that says hair is awrah or atleast indicates that?
