Per advice from the meta site, I must make it absolutely clear that I am not making any claim about -- and indeed have no interest in -- whether the incident actually occurred.

My question is about scholars who believe the incident occurred, or scholars who, for the sake of exploring the mind of Muhammad, have considered a hypothetical case in which the incident might have occurred. So I'm probably asking about secular scholars, or orientalist scholars, or perhaps very liberal Muslim scholars.

For context, here is why I'm interested in the question. As far as I can tell, Muhammad was a political genius. He knew how to get people to compromise -- just consider his skill in convincing the Ansar to accept the Muhajirun, not only initially as outsiders, but also for a number of months while the Muhajirun must surely have been a burden on the food supply, before the Muslim raiding parties began having success.

If Muhammad did deliver the Satanic Verses and then abrogate them, it seems an uncharacteristic blunder. Obviously, this could be a reason for believing the incident never occurred, but as I say, I'm not interested in whether it occurred. I know there are scholars who believe it did, and I'm wondering whether any of them have explored the possible reasons, what might have been going on in Muhammad's mind.

I'm not claiming the incident occurred. I'm not asking whether the incident occurred. I'm asking whether there are any scholars who have explored Muhammad's thinking, using the incident (hypothetical or otherwise) as a lens.

No he didn't intend to do that on purpose to make any political or strategic shifting in Quraish toward his view there is no one have thought of that because the shifting happened for a very few days. The few Muslims in Habesha (or region around Ethiopia now) from the first immigration heard about Quraish incident and they traveled immediately without making sure of the incident effect they traveled costly (unneeded costs of travelling) on an illusion that Qurish declared Islam or peace but they shocked by the reality, after a while prophet take a decision for about 80 Muslims (half of all Muslims in Quraish) to immigrate and return again to Habesha because Quarish was worst than ever in torture and grilling after (hypothetical narration) that Muhammad abrogated the satanic verses of appreciating their gods so the Quraish leaders were mad at him

or what really happened that they denied their kneeling for believing in his god and they Justified they were kneeling for their gods that Muhammad appreciating their gods (Heathenism). (appreciating means that Muhammad returned to the first beliefs of his people in Quarish) which didn't happen.

According to Interpretation of Quran books(Tafsir): While prophet Muhammad was reading Quran on this incident in Qurish. He was ahead of a delegation to go to Qurish nobles and leaders. Some of them have never heard Quran and some was at the beginning avoid listening to it afraid that it was so powerful to make them convert. So he was reading new inspired verses words of god and He saw his people in Qurish strife and disunity with him and his follower Muslims also mainly from Qurish. He wished if all could brought again in unity and harmony he wished god could inspire him some verses to calm the temper of his people also wished if god inspire him some words don't make the delegation with his people harder or furious of him. He wished if god soften their hearts to accept his message of Islam. The verses were pointed to disbelievers talking about their gods and logically criticizing with dialogue the disbelievers. The end of reading was a position were all Muslims suppose to kneel to god at the end of it. Chapter's name is AN-NAJM (THE STAR) - سورة النجم one most beautiful chapters. The disbelievers and Muslim believers (all listeners) kneeled whatever different reason they kneeled for. At the end Quraish leaders and nobles the disbelievers denied their converting to Islam or accepting peace and if Satan did something then he inspired them to say that they heard Muhammad appreciating their gods in his words or may be manipulated the voice of verses in their minds or something like that but never changed the god words on/by the tongue of prophet.

The controversy here about only and only how Satan decieved the listeners.

The liberal unbiased logical criticizing on the interpretation about this incident for verse Quran 22:52 is "tafsir al kortobi"

Narrations about Muhammad read satanic verses by deception and that never happened also never written. This so called narration by any scholars has no valid basis at any accounted valid hadith books like "Sahih Muslim" or "Sahih al-Bukhari" or etc. The narrators mainly classified very weak and the narration itself contradict with Quran. so all narrations about scholars themselves from untrusted narrators that explained or declared the incident as you said not an evidence since non was classified valid.

We don't talk about liberal or radical thinking we are talking about fact.

The fact is Quran declares that every word and letter spoken from prophet about teaching of Islam is totally inspired from god and is the word of god. And god said it as it is conveyed to us now and god promised protecting whole Quran from any danger of any twist or garble and the angel Gabriel the so called holy spirit was the one that his mission is to transfer word of god to his prophet.

Quran 53:2-4 same chapter of incident.

Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed.

Quran 22:52-54

And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke [or recited], Satan threw into it [some misunderstanding]. But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes precise His verses. And Allah is Knowing and Wise. [That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension. And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

Quran 41:6

Say, O [Muhammad], "I am only a man like you to whom it has been revealed that your god is but one God; so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness." And woe to those who associate others with Allah.
