What does this mean, can someone give me a good understanding of this line from the holy Qur'an,

enter image description here For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah . Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.

As much as I know these words from Quran are about the will of a society. For example, Imagine a society that is ruled by a dictatorship and people want to get rid of it or make a revolution or something like that. According to these words, Allah won't change their condition (dictatorship) to any better condition itself while people stand by and do nothing. (Allah is able to do it, but Allah won't). But when (In this example) people stand up against dictatorship and really do things to get rid of it, then Allah changes the condition.

I'm not a professional at interpreting Quran so my example may have flaws, but I just wanted to give you the idea. In brief, we should start the change from ourselves, not just sitting there and praying for it but doing nothing and expect Allah change things (like with some kind of magic).

The definition of that line and example is correct, you should be confident about what you are saying because the sentence as much as I know can decrease strength of answer. – Murtaza Sep 27 '14 at 12:05
  • Yes I agree, I just wanted to emphasis this is what I know, not necessarily what Quran means and there is a chance it is incorrect or incomplete. – Hamid Keshmiri Sep 27 '14 at 16:06
