In Islam there is a big controversy about who ate the Apple first, unlike Christianity where Eve ate the apple first. So who ate it first? Or did they eat it at the same time?

Reasons for controversy

In Quran God said:

فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ قَالَ يَا آدَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍ لّا يَبْلَى
Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?" [20:120]

So it is Adam who ate it??

While in another verse in Quran God Said:

So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, "Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?" [7:22]

so now it is Adam and Eve?? and again, In another verse God said:

وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَا إِلَى آدَمَ مِن قَبْلُ فَنَسِيَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُ عَزْمًا
And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.[20:115]

so is it Adam??

But again!! Mohammed (pbuh) said in Hadith?

If not for Eve, no women ever cheated her husband.

So now it is Eve!!

These are not all verses from Quran and Hadiths that has opposite meaning (or at least it seems like it has opposite meanings) which is the reason why some Muslims argue about this issue.

This should be two questions: one about who ate it first, and one about whether it's an apple. – Flimzy Jun 19 '12 at 23:35
splitting them... – user37 Jun 19 '12 at 23:36
-1 there is no controversy; the story is clearly outlined in the Qur'an. See Surah Baqarah, among other things. – ashes999 Jun 20 '12 at 1:19

@ashes999: There is no point in giving -1. You can point out the mistake in your answer. – Fahad Uddin Jun 20 '12 at 1:51
@StartupCrazy I believe this is a poorly researched, not useful question. That's what -1 means. – ashes999 Jun 20 '12 at 1:56

I don't believe that this is a good question; there is no controversy to begin with. The story is clearly outlined in the Qur'an. From Surah Baqarah:

But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, "Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time." See: Surah Baqarah

The Arabic clearly outlines "fa azallahumaa ash-shaytaan," that Satan caused them both to slip into the forbidden. There is no question of "Eve did it and therefore all women carry original sin until the end of time."

@HaLaBi: Your question lacked citation at first. – Fahad Uddin Jun 20 '12 at 2:03
@StartupCrazy Yup, the point here he totally DENIED that the controversy exists based on his personal beliefs not because I had no citations. He could've asked me to show some sources foe the controversy before he simple denies the existence of of it While it does exist.. So I added the citations to make him know why do Muslims have this controversy.. – user37 Jun 20 '12 at 2:05

I have updated my comments. Controversy means scholarly difference of opinion, not "normal Muslims don't know their deen and think something where there's nothing." Your question appears to be the latter to me; hence, -1. – ashes999 Jun 20 '12 at 2:10

God mention it in two different verses with a different meaning. So it is not a regular muslim who does not know his deen. It is simply there :) – user37 Jun 20 '12 at 2:14

It is not apple, it is "semerat" which means "the crop of plants and trees". The answer lies in the meaning of "semerat". Adam's story is a key to understanding how humans become caliphs one Earth. "Eating the semerat" was not an event which happend in a few hour, a few days, or a few months. I took maybe millions of years.

That story is mostly about development of soul in humans, and how humans become different from animals. We have to acknowledge that stories in Quran are carrying far far far more meaning that we can even imagine. They are not simple dialogs and conversations that we human do in our daily lives.

So, there is no simple answer to this question. Because this question contains a lot of other hidden questions inside, which are to be answered beforehand. Like "What does the thing (semarat) that Adam eat symbolize?", "What was the purpose of Devil, how did it dare to defy Allah?", etc.

citation needed, perhaps Quran or Hadith. – user37 Jun 19 '12 at 23:53
I was under the impression that Adam received his soul from Allah, after which he sneezed and was told to say "Alhamdulillah", not after the apple incident. – Pureferret Jun 19 '12 at 23:55
