I've been bought up in a culture where masturbation is a dirty disgusting thing, something which you never do, never talk about, and never even think about, and I have always thought that islam forbids masturbation.

Imam Shafi’i stated that masturbation is forbidden based on the following verses from the Qur’aan (interpretation of the meaning): "And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts). Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, - for them, they are free from blame. But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors." 23.5-7 Here the verses are clear in forbidding all illegal sexual acts (including masturbation) except for the wives or that their right hand possess. And whoever seeks beyond that is the transgressor. http://islamqa.info/en/ref/329

I read a question here at SE titled: Explaining to a toddler when masturbation is appropriate.

The title caught my attention. The reason for this I will be explaining below, but when I read the comments and answers, I was really shocked. It seems masturbation has become so "the norm" these days that parents actually encourage their children to do it, but in private. I guess that is still better than encouraging them to masturbate in public.

Anyway, at the same time I was a little relieved, the reason for this is because I have a toddler, she seems to masturbate too. I am concerned about this, and I was a little relieved when I realised that she is not the only toddler on the planet who does this. She is only little so I am sure she will not be sinning for this act. However, what does islam say about this and how would a parent go about stopping such a a dirty disgusting addiction preferably with islamic techniques, islamic parenting techniques etc?

Before people start judging us and thinking it's the parents fault, they should not do that type of stuff infront of her, or they should make sure she doesn't see anything inappropriate. You will be on the wrong track for thinking that. She basically has full body eczema, and I think she "discovered" her private area while trying to releave the itchiness of her eczema problem.

Toddlers will masturbate. It's by no means universal, but it's certainly very very common. It's standard, normal. –  TRiG Dec 30 '12 at 0:30

I've always wondered why masturbation is forbidden, when that verse says that it is permissible to have sex with "that which the right hand possesses". The right hand possesses other body parts as well including the right hand? –  Muz Aug 27 '13 at 7:16

Here is a copy/paste for the answer mentioned there:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad , is His slave and Messenger.

Masturbation is forbidden in the view of Hanbali School. Whoever practices it deserves a punishment. It is permissible only in the time of necessity. Necessity means the time one fears committing Zinaa (adultery/fornication) or one fears disease from the gathering of sperm and he is not able to get married. Imam Ahmad disliked it. It is also narrated from him that it is forbidden even when one fears Zinaa. Imam Ahmad supported this opinion as it is written in the book Funoon. “Because sexual acts have been forbidden except with spouses, masturbation is forbidden. The lawmaker (i.e., Allaah and His Prophet , have made fasting an alternate to marriage. The wet dream diminishes the sexual desire and reduces it.”

One should know that when Muslim scholars say, "It is permissible if one fears Zinaa" it means the time when a person strongly faces a sexual urge and the sources for Zinaa are not only available but are close. No doubt, every healthy youth sometimes faces a dire sexual drive and that the Prophet , did not prescribe any solution other than marriage or fasting if one cannot marry. The Prophet , said: “O young people, whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty and whoever is not able to marry should fast, as fasting diminishes the sexual urge.” One should have strong faith in what the Hadeeth establishes – which is that fasting helps and protects a youth from sexual desires.

As for the ways which help one be pious and avoid all such evils, we recommended the following:

  1. Avoiding all kinds of forbidden activities such as looking and listening to Haraam things. Hence, whoever enjoys Haraam such as obscene pictures or songs his desire would be excited and would be induced to bad thoughts.

  2. Using one's leisure time in good physical activities which consumes one's energy.

  3. Being with good friends who help in doing good deeds and avoiding bad deeds.

  4. Being away from bad company as much as possible.

For more details please refer to Fatwa: 81150.

Allaah Knows best.

Hope this helps.

It is based on answers provided by a group of scholars to questions posed by readers of Arab News in Saudi Arabia and provides in depth answers based on Quran, Hadith and logic.

It is a common problem for people who cannot bring their wives to live with them while they are working abroad to resort to masturbation as a means to relieve their sexual urge. People say that it is strictly forbidden. Please comment. (Original Question)

It is the case of countless number of people who are either unable to marry or, if they are married, are not living with their wives They have to deal with their sexual desire, which God has given us as a means to ensure the continuity of the human race. When they are troubled, they resort to masturbation.

Scholars differ on the ruling concerning this habit, with those taking a very strict view pronouncing it as forbidden, while others make it permissible in all situations. Neither attitude is correct, since there is no clear evidence to support total prohibition or general permission. The correct view is that all five rulings may apply in different situations. The five rulings range from prohibition to obligation, with discouragement, permissibility and encouragement in between.

In the case of a man living with his wife, with no problem between them, and nothing to prevent satisfaction of the sexual desire in the normal way, masturbation is deemed to be strongly discouraged. It could border on prohibition if the husband indulges in it too often, so as to fall short of giving his wife the satisfaction of her desire necessary to help her to maintain Islamic standards of virtuous morality.

In the case of a person who is unmarried and fears to slip into a more serious offense, it is encouraged to resort to masturbation in order to reduce his tension and be able to think clearly and refrain from what is definitely forbidden. This could border on obligation if the man seriously fears that he would commit fornication.

In other cases, which represent the overwhelming majority of situations, it is permissible, unless it becomes a very frequent habit, which debilitates the man, when it becomes discouraged, or Makrooh.

Having said that, young people are also encouraged to take measures to reduce the tension created by the need to control their sexual urge. This could be through keeping themselves busy, physical exercise, and fasting. The Prophet, peace be upon him, tells us: "Young people! Whoever of you is able to marry should do so. He who cannot may resort to fasting, for it provides protection."
