Continuing on from this question, I can see that the Shia view on Riba is that it is haraam.

So my question now is this. Are Riba based mortgages also haraam according to Shia views? Or does Riba become OK when it involves mortgages. My question is about a situation where a mortgage is not the only option, where you are not forced to get a mortgage, and you are free so choose to get rented accommodation instead which is 100% free from Riba.

I can not provide you the exact answer, because I am not expert in the case and it makes a lot of responsibility on me. However I tried to provide you several links, I hope you can find your answers there: Sistani, Al-Shia, Islamic Laws. – Ali Nov 20 '12 at 14:59
