I saw the etiquette of respecting the Holy Quran on a site that

  • one shouldn't not put their back towards the Quran or
  • extend their legs towards the Quran or
  • sit in a high place when the Quran is beneath.

I want to carry the Holy Quran with me when I'm on a long trip. Is it permitted in Islam to carry it in my double-sided shoulder bag?

Please support your answer with references from hadiths or from the Quran.

Reference of Hadiths or Quran is required to make something Haram, not Halal. e.g. If I say milk is Haram then I have to provide reference from Quran and/or Hadith. So if someone will give you that it is Haram to carry Quran in shoulder bag then s/he has to give reference from Quran and/or hadith. Otherwise not i.e. if I tell you (for the sake of argument) that it is totally legal then I don't have to give you reference from Quran/Hadith. – Kashif Nov 16 '12 at 12:29

I am a Muslim.

From my childhood I saw my elders bearing concepts like:

(1) You must not touch Koran without taking Wudu,

(2) You must not put Koran on your lap,

(3) You must not put Koran on the ground,

(4) You must not carry Koran in a bag,

etc.

I still obey these teachings.

But, I mostly avoid touching Koran and as a result reading of which became very rare. Moreover, maintaining a Koran became a tedious and fearful thing. As a result I read and know more about other scriptures of other religions that I do not need to maintain that much.

Suppose Allah has written a letter to you so that you can understand him and know about his teachings so that you can go to Jannah. Instead of reading the letter, you started to respect the letter so much that reading and knowing it became a tedious job. Then just try to understand what will Allah think about you.

Way of carrying a scripture doesn't make any difference. Reading, understanding and acting as per the teachings make a great difference and Muslims are reluctant about the later.
