The hadith is in Al-Hakim, and Mustadrak, by Ali may Allah be pleased with him. It basically says that the sufyani will be descendant of Khalid bin Yazid bin Abi Sfyan, he will emerge in Damascus, and he will kill many and the killing will be so bad that it will get to a point were women will be sliced open and the infants in them will be killed. The Hadith goes on, it is long, but I wonder what is the authenticity of it.

Can you find any version of it in the major six books of ahadith? –  ashes999 Oct 16 '12 at 14:26
@ashes999 no, i don't think so. in the Hadith above mentioned in my question, it talks about them and a army being swallowed by the desert. there is this hadith sunnah.com/riyadussaliheen/1/2 but it is not the same. –  Al Ummat Oct 16 '12 at 14:40
there are different and both authentic and not authentic ahadith about sufyani. you should specify hadith with reference and chain of narrators. –  Battle of Karbala Oct 16 '12 at 15:11
@Ahmadi from the book in which I read the Hadith it only says Ali may Allah be pleased with him said it. So it is not from the Prophet, Peace be Upon Him. –  Al Ummat Oct 16 '12 at 15:14
What that Hadith says is what many Shia Muslims also believe, but it is not clear that Assufyani will certainly be Syrian, there are lots of Ahadith talking about the details of what happens before, with and after his rise. Also the army being swallowed by the desert is again in Shia Ahadith and among the certain happenings of the ending times, that's called the sign from the Earth, we also have a sign from sky which will happen on the 23rd of ramadam before Imam Mahdi will rise. –  owari Oct 16 '12 at 20:00

According to Shia Islam Altough there are some hadith saying Sufyani is not a specific person and is a system and for each revolution is a sufyni but still there are some hadith saying Sufyani of time of Mahdi a.s. is descendant of Abi Sfyan. for example this hadith from Imam Sadiq a.s.:

«انا و آل ابى سفیان اهل بیتین تعادینا فى اللّه: قلنا صدق اللّه وقالوا کذب اللّه: قاتل ابوسفیان رسول اللّه(صلى الله علیه وآله وسلم) و قاتل معاویة على بن ابى طالب(علیه السلام) و قاتل یزید بن معاویة الحسین بن على(علیه السلام) و السّفیانى یقاتل القائم(3)

I and Aal Abi Sfyan (descendant of Abi Sfyan) are two Ahl bayt (household/group) that are enemies of each other about Allah. we said Allah said truth but they said Allah said lie. Abi Sfyan fought prophet SAWW and Muaviyeh fought Ali ibn Abi Talib A.S. and Yazid fought Hussain ibn Ali a.s. and Sufyani will fight Mahdi A.S.

About Sufyani there are many hadith but not all of them are considered authentic. there are some researchers dedicated to researches about ends of time and movement of Imam Mahdi a.s. and its signs. they say there are near 1000 signs mentioned in ahadith about signs of start of movement of Imam Mahdi a.s. that more than 950 of them have happened true until now. Ali Al-Kourani is a great scholar who has spend many years for research among dfferent hadith regarding the appearance of Imam Mahdi and has written a famous book based on his researches and determining authentic and non autenthic hadith. his book is called Epoch of Appearance ('Asr zohor).

He says in this book that the movement of Sufyani will be after an earthquake in Damascus with 100,000 being killed in it and so any movement in Damascus before this earthquake can not be considered as movement of Sufyani but current conflicts in Syria can be introductory steps of it. The first link Emergence of Sufyani has nothing specifically to do with Sufyani, Rather, it's personal Imam's website. –  hawk Dec 12 '13 at 4:21
@hawk yes. it is because the programming of that site is changed and I could not find the new url. so I removed that reference and added the name of the book which is the main reference of this answer. –  Battle of Karbala Dec 15 '13 at 16:00
